Post-Carbon Research Group

We are living in a climate crisis. The world has reached an ecological tipping point where we must transition toward a post-carbon future. We acknowledge our industry’s role in the climate crisis and the urgency to act today.

SvN’s Post Carbon Research Group supports a post-carbon culture that empowers our team of architects, planners, landscape architects and urban designers to advise our clients and radically re-think and decarbonize every one of our projects.

We are developing new strategies, tools, resources and collaborations to formulate the process of non-extractive architecture, which is not intrinsically dependent on any form of exploitation or extraction, and reconsiders the broader environmental and social impacts on our planet.
Our goal is to establish a strategic path to net zero carbon for all projects by 2030, which includes the following measures:

  1. Prioritizing the reuse of existing buildings and materials;
  2. Minimizing operational energy through high-performance building envelopes and systems;
  3. Minimizing embodied carbon in construction materials;
  4. Promoting electrification over fossil fuels; and
  5. Sequestering carbon through the use of bio-materials and green roofs.
